The Work

The Work is Byron Katie’s four questions for a thought that keeps hurting you. You write down one sentence you believe and put each question to it, one screen at a time.

What it asks you

  1. Write the thought. Write one plain sentence that keeps coming back, about a person or a situation. “She thinks I’m not up to this” is one. If nothing comes, tap one of the common ones.
  2. Is it true. Say yes or no, whichever comes first. A no takes you straight to the third question.
  3. Can you know it for certain. Answer yes or no again. Look for any situation where the sentence might not be wholly true.
  4. How do you react when you believe it. Write what happens in your body and how you treat people when the thought takes hold.
  5. Who would you be without it. Picture the same room and the same people, with the sentence gone from your head. Write what you see, how you feel and what you do.

The longer read on this one is The four questions Byron Katie asks of a thought.
