Inside the Astera 13 Week Focus planner

That is the page you would get, printed at A5.

The daily page
84

You will look at one page eighty-four times.

Twelve weeks, one page a day. It is the same page every time. Pick up a planner in a shop and somebody you have never met chose what is on that page, and if one of the lines is not for you, you look at it eighty-four times anyway.

Here you take it out. Twenty-one blocks, your order, your wording, and a book printed with exactly what you left in.

Build your page Free. The layout is kept for you.

Eighty-four daily pages in a twelve-week book. The gold one is week four, Thursday.

From the reviews

What people tell us went wrong with the last planner they bought.

The redesign

Nobody can redesign it under you.

A favourite planner comes back the next year with the habit tracker gone, or the hourly column moved eight rows down, and after four years of buying it somebody goes looking for something else. On one popular journal, eight reviewers asked in public to be sold the old edition instead. None of them got an answer, and there are sixty-two second-hand copies listed on eBay.

Your layout is saved against your email and we do not touch it. If we ever change how a block renders we version it, so the old one still prints. Order it again in three years and it is the same page.

The price

You pay once.

No subscription for the book and none for the app. Paper, printing and postage cost money every time. Running the app costs us very little, and not per person.

The dates

Nothing is dated.

A book that arrives in March opens at day one. Miss four days in June and the page you come back to is the next blank one.

Buying it blind

You read the whole book first.

A planner in a shop is shrink-wrapped. A planner online is three photographs of the cover and one of a spread, so you find out what the daily page is really like in January.

All 136 pages of yours are on screen before you pay, the eighty-four daily ones included.

The object

A5 hardcover, full colour, printed and posted.

Two halves. The front is what you want, in your own words and pictures. The back is the daily page, eighty-four times. Your name is the title.

The vision14

What does a Tuesday look like in the life you are building?

Up before the house. Coffee, then two hours on the thing that matters before anyone needs me. School run at half eight. Back at the desk by nine, done by four, which is the part I have never once managed. The shed by five with the door open and the radio on.

You answer by typing or by talking. A spoken answer is transcribed and printed as words on the page, and the star beside it plays the recording in the app.

The vision26
Caption line, printed.

Your photographs are printed into the page, full colour, with a caption line underneath. Nothing to stick in and nothing to fall out a month later.

The app, free

It plays you back, and it never asks for money.

Same cover, same colour, your name on it, and the cards are the blocks you chose in the order you put them. At a time you set it plays the recording you made and shows you a page from the front of the book.

  • Free, with no trial period and no cap on recordings.
  • Every recording is backed up, from the first one.
  • Works on its own if you never print a book.
  • No keyboard in it. You record, or it reads back what you typed in the builder.

You never have to record anything. Typing gets you the same book, and the app will read the written version out instead.

Questions

The things people ask before they buy.

Do I have to change anything?
No. The twelve on the shelf are finished. Pick one, answer the front-half questions, and it prints. Changing it is there for people who have bought four planners and can name what each one got wrong.
What if I want the same book again next year?
Your layout is saved. Answer the front-half questions again for the new year and leave the daily page alone.
Do I have to record my voice?
No, typing gets you the same book. Some questions are easier said out loud than written, and that is the only reason recording exists. Spoken answers are printed as text either way.
Where do the twenty-one blocks come from?
We went through the daily pages of twelve journals and planners that sell well and wrote down every field on them. Twenty-six fields. Twenty-two showed up in three books or more, so those are the conventions rather than one brand's idea, and twenty-one of them are in the builder. The wording on every block is ours, not theirs.
How do photographs work?
You upload them and they print into the page, in full colour, with a caption line if you want one. There is nothing to stick in, nothing to line up and nothing that can fall out later.

A photograph can sit inside the page with a margin around it, or run right off the edge and cover the whole thing. You choose per page, and the page count and the price move as you add them.

The one thing to know is that a photograph has to be big enough. We work out whether yours is sharp enough at the size you have put it, and say so before you pay rather than after the book arrives.
What does the app cost?
Nothing. Your recordings are backed up from the first one whether or not you have ever bought a book, and there is no paid tier above it to be moved onto later.
Can I sell a journal I designed?
Yes. Publish it to the shelf and you earn €15 on every book printed on your shape, paid monthly. Buyers still answer their own prompts and write their own vision, so their book is theirs. You never see what they wrote.
Can I buy this for someone else?
Sort of, and this is the part we are least happy with. The whole thing is built out of somebody's own words, so we cannot make it for them. What you can buy is a credit, and one page at the front to write to them, printed in the book. They do the rest.
