Undated planners start the day they arrive
An undated planner has a line at the top of each page for you to write the date. You can begin it in any month, and no pages go to waste.
Dated vs undated planners
A dated planner holds you to the calendar. Buy a year planner in March and a quarter of it is already gone. Buy one in July and you’ve lost half.
Miss a fortnight in a dated book and there are fourteen printed pages with nothing on them.
The downsides
- You write the date yourself every day.
- A weekly spread can’t know which days fall at the weekend, so the layout has to work either way.
- There are no printed bank holidays or moon phases.
- If you stop for a month and come back, the book shows no gap.
Why 90 day planners are undated
Clever Fox, Goal Crazy, Best Planner Ever, 90X and Saint Belford all sell their 90 day and 13 week planners undated. Each of them says you can start any day of the year without wasting a page.
When a dated planner suits you better
If your planner is mostly a diary of appointments, go dated. You’ll want the weekday under each number, and you’ll want to flip to the twelfth of March without counting.
If you use it for goals and habits, an undated one fits better.

Are Astera journals undated?
Yes, all of them. Every daily page has a line at the top for the date.
When should I start a 90 day planner?
Whenever you’ve decided what the ninety days are for. In an undated book, day one is the day you write the first date.
Can I use an undated planner as a diary?
Yes, if you write the dates in ahead. Fill in the next few weeks before you book anything into them.
